Report a change to Winter sun and New Year's: gay getaways, December to March

The short version

If you want warm days without a passport, it's Florida or the desert. For guaranteed heat and a short flight, Puerto Vallarta. For something bigger, the southern hemisphere is in full summer: Cape Town, Sydney and Rio all throw their biggest parties of the year between New Year's and early March.

The temperatures below are long-term averages from each country's weather service, rounded to the nearest degree, for the coolest and warmest of December, January, February and March. Any one week can run hotter or colder.

Gran Canaria's figures are for Las Palmas, on the northeast coast, and Sitges uses Barcelona's, the nearest station in the table. TBA means the organizer hasn't announced dates yet, the same as on our calendar.

Close to home: the desert and Florida

Palm Springs

The warmest of the dry options, with a catch: desert nights are cold. Expect highs around 70°F in December and January and lows in the mid-40s, warming to the low 80s by March. That's perfect for the small walled resorts with heated pools, as long as you pack a sweater for the walk back from Arenas Road. It rarely rains, about an inch a month or less. Winter is its season, so book early for long weekends. Plan it: Palm Springs 101, men's resorts and guest houses.

Key West

The warmest of the US options: highs from the mid-70s to around 80°F and average lows in the mid-to-high 60s. Winter is peak season. The Florida Keys tourism office says December rates run higher, "especially around the holidays," calls January and February peak season too, and recommends booking early. On New Year's Eve, a drag queen is lowered from the Bourbon Street Pub's balcony (724 Duval St) in a giant red high heel as midnight arrives; for the night that rang in 2026 it was Mulan Alexander. Watching from the street is free, and the pub sells a small number of balcony tickets. Plan it: Key West 101, guest houses.

Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors

Similar days to Key West, with cooler nights in the low 60s in January. Fort Lauderdale has the country's biggest cluster of men's guesthouses, and winter and spring are its peak, with summer quieter and cheaper. Pride Fort Lauderdale is due to return in early 2027 under new organizers, but there's no date or official site yet, so don't book around it until there is. Plan it: guesthouses, the South Florida city guide (it covers Wilton Drive).

Miami Beach

About the same weather as Fort Lauderdale. The big winter weekend is Winter Party Festival, March 5–8, 2027, with its beach party on Miami Beach. It lands in Miami Beach's spring-break stretch: in March 2026 the city ran garage flat rates, checkpoints at the Ocean Drive beach entrances and DUI checkpoints on weekends, so check the city's rules before you go and leave the car behind. Plan it: where to stay, the circuit guide for pacing a party weekend.

A short flight south: Puerto Vallarta

The warmest easy trip on the list. Highs sit in the mid-80s from December to March, and it barely rains: about two rainy days a month in December and January and less than one in February and March. Most gay visitors stay in the Zona Romántica, where Los Muertos beach, the Blue Chairs stretch and the bars are a few blocks apart. November to April is the dry, sunny season. There's no big dated gay event in the window; Vallarta Pride is in late May.

Same-sex marriage is legal in every Mexican state. Many hotels and condos ask non-guests to show ID at the front desk, so check the visitor policy if that matters to you. Plan it: gay hotels in the Zona Romántica.

Worth the long flight

Gran Canaria (Maspalomas)

Europe's winter-sun favorite is mild rather than hot: highs around 70°F, lows near 60°F. Gay life is in Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, with the Yumbo Centre bars at night and the dunes by day. Winter Pride Maspalomas runs November 2–8, 2026, with the Pride Walk on Saturday, Nov 7; it's just before this guide's window, and a good excuse to go early. Stick to the marked paths in the dunes: they're a protected reserve and wandering off them can get you fined. Where to stay.

Sitges

Come for Carnival, not the beach. Barcelona's February highs are in the high 50s, with lows in the low 40s. Sitges Carnival is famous for its two big night parades through the old town; 2026's ran February 12–18. The town hasn't announced 2027 dates yet. Carnival ends on Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 10, 2027, so expect it in the first ten days of February. Book a room once the program is out, or stay in Barcelona, 40 minutes away by train. Where to stay.

Cape Town

It's summer: highs in the high 70s to around 80°F, and not much rain. Most gay visitors stay in De Waterkant or nearby Green Point and Sea Point. Cape Town Pride hasn't announced 2027 dates. In 2026 it ended on Saturday, February 28, with a parade from Alfred Street in De Waterkant at 11 am and the Mardi Gras at Green Point Track until 9 pm. Take a ride-hailing car at night rather than walking between neighborhoods. Where to stay.

Bangkok

Hot all winter: highs near 90°F, climbing past 90 in February and March, with very little rain. November to February is the coolest, driest stretch. Gay Bangkok centers on Silom, with bars on Soi 2 and Soi 4, and the Skytrain and MRT make it easy to get around. Thailand's drug laws are severe, and police sometimes run checks around nightlife areas. The big gay party, GCircuit Songkran, is in mid-April. Where to stay.

Sydney

Summer, with highs around 80°F, but expect showers: Sydney averages 11 to 14 rainy days a month in this season. Mardi Gras hasn't announced 2027 dates (the official site says the season is "loading"). In 2026 the festival ran February 13 to March 1, with the Oxford Street parade on Saturday, February 28. On New Year's Eve, fireworks go off over the harbor at 9 pm and midnight; some viewing spots are ticketed, so look at the official New Year's Eve site before you pick one.

Rio de Janeiro

The hottest and wettest of the summer cities: highs in the mid-80s, warm nights in the 70s, and nine to thirteen rainy days a month. Carnival 2027 peaks with the top samba schools' parades at the Sambódromo on Sunday to Tuesday, February 7–9, per the samba schools' league, LIESA, with street blocos all over the city before and during it. New Year's Eve (Réveillon) is the other big night: the city's own figures put about 2.6 million people on Copacabana beach for the free shows and a 12-minute fireworks display at the start of 2026.

New Year's Eve somewhere warm

  • Key West: the red-shoe drop on Duval Street, free from the street. The guest houses fill early for the holiday week, so this is the one to book first.
  • Sydney: harbor fireworks at 9 pm and midnight. Sydney's midnight is 8 am on Dec 31 in New York, so friends back home can watch you ring it in over breakfast.
  • Rio: a free beach party on Copacabana with about 2.6 million people (the city's count for the start of 2026). Pick a meeting spot before midnight, because you won't find each other after.
  • Palm Springs or Fort Lauderdale: a quieter night at a men's resort or on Wilton Drive. Ask in Travel & Trips what's on this year.

Rather have snow and a fireplace? Provincetown's First Light weekend is on the calendar too, and the gay ski weeks start in mid-January.

Booking it

  • Book the bed first. Winter is peak season in Key West and Fort Lauderdale, and the Keys tourism office says December rates run highest around the holidays. Event weekends fill fast too. Flights are easier to rearrange than a guest house that's full.
  • Price the weeks either side. Before you commit to the holiday week, look at early December or a midweek stretch in January. The weather in the table barely changes, and the rate might.
  • Wait for real dates. Sydney Mardi Gras, Cape Town Pride, Sitges Carnival and Pride Fort Lauderdale are all TBA right now. A refundable rate lets you hold a room while you wait. Our calendar updates when organizers announce.
  • Hurricane season is over. It ends November 30 in both the Atlantic and the eastern Pacific, so storm risk isn't the worry for Florida or Vallarta in these months that it is in the fall.
  • Leaving the US? Flying to any of the non-US places here needs a valid passport, and each country has its own entry rules for US travelers. Check them on travel.state.gov before you book, not at the airport.
  • Split it. Two friends in one guest house room, or a group in a rental, cuts the per-person cost fast. Post in Travel & Trips if you're looking for people to share with.

Where this might not fit

  • If money's tight, skip the holiday week and the event weekends. A mid-January weekday trip to Palm Springs or Fort Lauderdale costs far less than New Year's in Key West, and the weather is almost the same.
  • If you're not out, remember that parades and Carnival are photographed and filmed from every angle. A resort pool or a quiet guest house is more private.
  • If heat is hard on you, Bangkok and Rio are genuinely hot and humid. Gran Canaria and Palm Springs are the gentle ones.
  • If you don't drink or party, the desert, the Keys and Puerto Vallarta work fine as beach-and-book trips. You don't have to go near Winter Party or the Sambódromo.
