The short version

Two places, one trip. Fort Lauderdale has the beach and the country's biggest cluster of men's guesthouses. Wilton Manors, a small city just north of it, is the gayborhood, built along Wilton Drive. Most visitors sleep in Fort Lauderdale (Victoria Park or near Sebastian Street) and spend their evenings on the Drive, a short ride away.

Winter and spring are peak season. Summer is hotter, quieter and cheaper. Miami Beach is a train ride south, and our South Florida city guide covers both if you're thinking of moving here rather than visiting.

Wilton Drive

Visit Lauderdale calls Wilton Manors "South Florida's most famous gayborhood," and the town calls itself the Island City (it sits between two forks of the Middle River). The bars, restaurants and shops are on Wilton Drive, mostly between NE 21st Court and N Dixie Highway, the same stretch Wicked Manors closes for Halloween.

  • The Pride Center at Equality Park (2040 N Dixie Hwy) is the community center, with free HIV and STI testing and a PrEP clinic.
  • The Stonewall National Museum & Archives is in Fort Lauderdale at 1300 E Sunrise Blvd, a short drive south. Check its site for current exhibits and hours.
  • Brunch is a sport here. Rosie's and The Well both do a Sunday crowd.

The beach: Sebastian Street

The gay beach is at Sebastian Street and A1A (N Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd), north of Las Olas. Visit Lauderdale calls it one of the country's top-rated gay beaches. The Grand Resort and the W are a short walk away (see where to stay).

  • Swim by a lifeguard tower. Fort Lauderdale's lifeguards are on duty 9:45 am to 7 pm in spring and summer and 9:15 am to 6 pm in fall and winter, and the city says most water incidents happen where there's no lifeguard.
  • Read the flags. Green is calm, yellow is moderate surf or currents, red means stay out, double red means the water is closed. A purple flag means jellyfish, Portuguese man-of-war or sea lice, and it can fly with any of the others.
  • Sun: it's strong even in January. Bring more sunscreen and water than you think.

The bars

Nearly all of these are on Wilton Drive and you can walk between them. Ramrod is the exception, a short ride south in Fort Lauderdale.

  • Hunters (2232–2238 Wilton Dr): the big multi-room bar, open since 1980. Karaoke early in the week, two-stepping and line dancing on Wednesdays, a dance floor on weekends and the Sunday tea dance.
  • The Manor (2345 Wilton Dr): the big nightclub complex, open on its party nights rather than every night.
  • Georgie's Alibi Monkey Bar (2266 Wilton Dr): a big, easy neighborhood bar with food and a Sunday drag show.
  • The Well (2426 Wilton Dr): bar and restaurant with something every night, from trivia to Sunday drag brunch.
  • Pub on the Drive (2283 Wilton Dr): burgers, a back patio and a low-key drink before the clubs. It was listed for sale in 2026, so check it's open before you go.
  • Rosie's (2449 Wilton Dr): bar and grill, best known for Sunday brunch.
  • GYM Sportsbar (2287 Wilton Dr): screens everywhere, for game days. More in where to watch the game.
  • Eagle Wilton Manors (2209 Wilton Dr): the leather and bear bar.
  • Scandals Saloon (3073 NE 6th Ave): the country-western bar, where the line-dance teachers are patient with beginners.
  • Ramrod (1508 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale): the year-round leather bar, open since 1994.

Map pins and tags: Wilton Manors bars. Not drinking? Sober nights out has Fort Lauderdale's recovery clubhouse and more.

Getting there and getting around

  • Flying in: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) is the closest airport. Miami (MIA) and West Palm Beach work too if the fares are better.
  • Tri-Rail is the commuter train. Its FLL Airport station in Dania Beach has a free shuttle to the terminals every 15 to 20 minutes while trains are running, and the line runs south to Miami Airport station, where you can change to Metrorail.
  • Brightline is the faster intercity train. Its Fort Lauderdale station is downtown at 101 NW 2nd Ave, next to the county bus terminal, with trains south to Aventura and Miami and north to Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Orlando. It's the easy way to do a Miami Beach day without driving. Check gobrightline.com for fares and its airport connection.
  • Free shuttles: the city's LauderGO! Community Shuttle (the old Sun Trolley) is free. The Beach Link runs daily and the Las Olas Link runs Friday to Sunday.
  • Water Taxi: hop-on, hop-off boats on the Intracoastal and the New River, with stops along the way. An adult ticket, good for unlimited stops on its route, is $38.
  • Everything else: none of the trains go to Wilton Drive, so most people use rideshare between the beach, the guesthouses and the bars. If you're drinking on the Drive, that's the plan anyway.

When to go

  • December to April: peak season, with warm days and nights in the 60s. Book the guesthouses early for the holidays. How it compares with Key West, Palm Springs and Vallarta: winter sun and New Year's.
  • Summer and early fall: hot, humid and quieter, with lower rates. It's also hurricane season; the Good to know note on our stays page has what to do about it.
  • Late October: Wicked Manors on Halloween night, and the start of the season.
  • June: Stonewall Pride on Wilton Drive.
