Berlin 101
Schöneberg's Motzstraße, Kreuzberg and Neukölln, the clubs, getting around on the BVG, CSD in July, the Schwules Museum and the queer Christmas market.
Last checked October 2026. Things change: confirm schedules and prices before you go.
The short version
Stay in Schöneberg, near Nollendorfplatz, and you can walk home from most of the gay bars. Go to Kreuzberg and Neukölln for the younger, queerer bars and the clubs. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn get you everywhere, all night at weekends.
May to September is the easy time to go, with CSD in late July and Folsom Europe in September. Winter is cold and dark but has the queer Christmas market. The Good to know note on our stays page covers the marriage law and the clubs' camera-sticker rule, so we won't repeat it here.
Schöneberg: Nollendorfplatz and Motzstraße
The streets around Nollendorfplatz have been Berlin's gay neighborhood since the 1920s, when the Eldorado club was at Motzstraße 24 and Christopher Isherwood lived around the corner at Nollendorfstraße 17 (there's a plaque). The bars are on Motzstraße and Fuggerstraße, a few minutes from the station, where four U-Bahn lines (U1 to U4) stop. On the station building, a memorial stone reads "Totgeschlagen – Totgeschwiegen" (beaten to death, silenced to death), for the gay victims of the Nazis.
- Hafen (Motzstraße 19): part of the street since 1990, with several rooms, a friendly local-and-visitor mix and pop from past decades.
- Blond (Motzstraße 28): a colorful cocktail bar, open daily from 3pm, with Schlager singalongs and drag bingo.
- Heile Welt (Motzstraße 5): a relaxed lounge by the station, open from 8pm, for a date or an after-work drink.
In July, the Lesbisch-schwules Stadtfest takes over Motzstraße and the streets around it for a weekend. The 32nd ran July 18–19, 2026, free, and the district expected more than 350,000 people; 2027's dates aren't out yet. Map pins and tags: our Berlin bars page.
Kreuzberg and Neukölln
East of Schöneberg, the scene is younger, more mixed and more political, and the nights run later.
- SO36 (Oranienstraße, Kreuzberg): the club's queer party Gayhane is on once a month, on a Saturday. The next ones are October 31, November 28 and December 26, 2026.
- Möbel Olfe (at Kottbusser Tor): a busy queer bar, open Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm. Tuesday is FLINTA* night (women, lesbian, intersex, nonbinary, trans and agender people).
- Südblock (at Kottbusser Tor, near SO36 and Olfe): a queer bar, open from 5pm (3pm on Sundays), with its Salon Salaam nights.
- SchwuZ, Berlin's long-running queer club, filed for insolvency in 2025 and left its Neukölln home. It's now throwing parties at other venues while it builds a new one, so check its site for where it is this month.
Going to Berghain, Lab.oratory or the other big clubs? Read the stays page's Good to know note on cameras first; the doors are strict.
Getting around: the BVG
Berlin's U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses share one ticket system (BVG runs most of it). Most of what you'll visit is in fare zones A and B.
| Ticket | 2026 price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Single, AB | €4.00 | One trip in the city, the zones most visitors need. |
| Single, ABC | €5.00 | The airport (BER is in zone C) and Potsdam. |
| Short trip | €2.80 | Three U-Bahn or S-Bahn stops, or six by tram or bus. |
| 24-hour, AB | €11.20 | Worth it from three rides a day. |
| Deutschlandticket | €63 a month | Local and regional transit across Germany, sold as a monthly subscription. |
- From BER: the FEX airport express, regional trains and the S9 and S45 run into the city. You need an ABC ticket.
- Validate: stamp a paper ticket in the yellow or red machine before you ride, or buy it in the BVG apps.
- At night: the U-Bahn runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights. On weeknights, night buses (N1 to N9) follow the U-Bahn lines.
CSD Berlin
Berlin's Pride is called CSD (Christopher Street Day). In 2026 the parade set off at noon on Saturday, July 25, from Spittelmarkt, and went past Potsdamer Platz and Nollendorfplatz to the Brandenburg Gate. That evening, at the edge of the celebrations, a man drove a car into people and then attacked with a blade. One woman was killed and 31 people were injured; police shot the attacker, who died. Berlin held a memorial gathering at the Brandenburg Gate the next day.
CSD 2027 is on Saturday, July 24. Check the organizers' site closer to the day for the route and any security rules. In 2026 the Stadtfest on Motzstraße was the weekend before, so book Schöneberg early if you want both.
History: the Schwules Museum and the memorial
- Schwules Museum (Lützowstraße 73, a short walk north of Nollendorfplatz): changing exhibitions on queer history and culture. It's open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12 to 6, Thursday 12 to 8, Saturday 2 to 7 and Sunday 2 to 6, and closed on Tuesdays. Tickets are €10 (€5 reduced). It's closed November 3–8, 2026, and from November 9 to 26 only one exhibition is open, at the reduced price.
- The Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism is on Ebertstraße, at the edge of the Tiergarten across from the Holocaust Memorial. It's a concrete block by Elmgreen & Dragset, opened in 2008, with a film you watch through a small window.
Winter: the queer Christmas market
Berlin is cold in winter: January and February average around freezing. The reason to go anyway is Christmas Avenue, the LGBTQIA* Christmas market on Nollendorfplatz in front of the Metropol, from November 23 to December 23, 2026. It's free and 16+, open 4 to 10pm Monday to Thursday and 3 to 10pm Friday to Sunday. Before it, the Winterdays run November 4–22 on the same square (closed November 15 and 22). The bars are a block away, and you can be back at a Schöneberg hotel in five minutes.
Want warmth instead? Winter sun and New Year's has the warm-weather options.
