The gay guy's moving-cities playbook

Neighborhoods, PrEP, friends, housing and the first 30 days: how to land in a new city and actually have a life there.

Last checked October 2026. Things change: confirm schedules and prices before you go.

1. Pick the neighborhood around your life, not the bars

The gayborhood is fun to visit and expensive to live in. Plenty of gay guys live a train ride away: Astoria or Crown Heights instead of Hell's Kitchen, Oakland instead of the Castro, Wilton Manors instead of South Beach. Choose by commute first, then by how close you are to your scene. Each city guide lists where people actually live.

2. Don't let your PrEP lapse

  • Before you move, ask your prescriber for a 90-day supply and copies of your recent labs.
  • Line up a new clinic in week one. Every city guide lists the local LGBTQ health center.
  • Changing insurance? Many LGBTQ health centers can help you get PrEP covered or free while you sort it out.
  • Ask about DoxyPEP while you're there.

3. Make friends on purpose

  • Join a league in your first month. Stonewall Sports has chapters in most big cities. There are also gay softball, flag football, rugby, volleyball, swim teams and Front Runners running clubs. It's the fastest way to a friend group.
  • Volunteer for Pride or the local LGBTQ center.
  • Post in your city board here: "New to Chicago, who's doing trivia?" works better than you'd think.
  • Do the after-work happy hour a few times. Regulars become friends.

4. Housing without getting scammed

  • Never wire a deposit for an apartment you haven't seen, in person or on a live video walkthrough.
  • LGBTQ roommate groups on Facebook and Reddit exist in every big city. Meet before you sign.
  • In New York, the FARE Act (in effect since June 2025) generally means landlords, not tenants, pay the broker they hire.

5. Know the local landscape

Legal protections vary a lot by state. The Movement Advancement Project's equality maps (lgbtmap.org) show where your new state stands on things like nondiscrimination and health care. Update your ID and voter registration once you're settled.

Your first 30 days

  1. Week 1: set up a clinic, find your gym, walk the gayborhood once in daylight.
  2. Week 2: sign up for a league or club and go to one event at the LGBTQ center.
  3. Week 3: hit the big after-work happy hour twice. Same bar, same night.
  4. Week 4: check the calendar and plan your first big weekend with your new people.
