City guide

New York City

Hell's Kitchen after work, the Village for history, Brooklyn for the late, weird and wonderful.

New York doesn't have one gayborhood any more. It has a dozen scenes. Hell's Kitchen (9th and 10th Aves) is the busiest bar strip, with 2-for-1 happy hours and drag most nights. Chelsea still has the Eagle and the clinics, the West Village has the history, and Bushwick and Williamsburg are where the queer party scene goes late.

Moving tips

  • Hell's Kitchen happy hours (2-for-1 until 7–9 pm) are how New Yorkers make gay friends after work.
  • Summer weekends empty the city for Fire Island. Learn the LIRR to Sayville before Memorial Day.
  • Join a league. Volleyball, softball and swim teams are the fastest social circle in the city.
  • Brooklyn and Queens are cheaper and gayer than you'd think; check Astoria and Crown Heights before you sign a Manhattan lease.
