The short version

Stay in or near the Village (le Village), on Sainte-Catherine Street East, and you can walk between the bars, the drag shows and the patios. In summer the street closes to cars and turns into a kilometer of terraces. Fierté Montréal, the city's Pride, is at the start of August.

Expect French first (Cabaret Mado's own listings are in French), and start with a "bonjour" when you walk in. The Good to know note on our stays page covers the marriage law and Quebec's rights history, so we won't repeat it here.

The Village: Sainte-Catherine Est

The Village runs along Sainte-Catherine Est from Berri-UQAM metro to Papineau, with Beaudry station in the middle. Each summer the street becomes a pedestrian mall from Place Émilie-Gamelin to Papineau Avenue, lined with some 40 terrasses (patios).

  • Cabaret Mado (1115 Sainte-Catherine E): the drag house named for Mado Lamotte, with a show most nights at 9pm and an improv league on Sundays. Book a seat for Friday or Saturday.
  • Complexe Sky (1478 Sainte-Catherine E): three floors, with a summer rooftop that has a pool and hot tub, and drag on Saturdays from 10pm.
  • Bar Le Cocktail (1669 Sainte-Catherine E): drag shows every night and a busy street patio in summer.
  • Club Unity (1171 Sainte-Catherine E): one of the city's biggest clubs, with two dance floors and a rooftop terrace.
  • Aigle Noir (1315 Sainte-Catherine E) and Bar Le Stud (1812 Sainte-Catherine E): the leather, denim and bear bars. Le Stud, open since 1995, calls itself a men's bar and has patios on two streets.
  • Le Date (1218 Sainte-Catherine E) and Le Normandie (1295 Atateken, since 1981): cheap drinks and karaoke, the easy first stop.

Beyond the Village

Queer Montreal isn't only on Sainte-Catherine. A few places Tourisme Montréal points to:

  • Notre-Dame-des-Quilles (32 Beaubien E, Petite-Patrie): a neighborhood bar with queer nights and a miniature bowling alley.
  • Bar Milton-Parc (3714 Parc Ave): a worker-owned queer co-op with board game, karaoke and comedy nights.
  • Champs (3956 Saint-Laurent, the Plateau): a sports bar with big screens upstairs and LGBTQ+ nights, queer line dancing among them.

History: the Truxx raid

On October 22, 1977, police raided two downtown gay bars, Truxx and Le Mystique, and arrested 146 men. The next night more than 2,000 people filled the corner of Stanley and Sainte-Catherine to protest, and it ended in clashes with police. Later that year, Quebec became the first province to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Fierté Montréal

Montreal's Pride, Fierté Montréal, runs for about ten days at the turn of July and August, with shows, community days and the parade. The 2026 festival, its 20th, ran July 31 to August 9. Dates for 2027 aren't out yet; our calendar updates when they are. Rooms near the Village go fast, so book something refundable early.

If you remember the Black & Blue festival: its organizers ended it in 2023.

When to go

  • Summer: the pedestrian mall and the terrasses on Sainte-Catherine.
  • Late July to early August: Fierté Montréal (2027 dates TBA).
  • Fall: the street is back to traffic, but the bars and Mado's shows run all year.
  • Winter: cold. Pack for it and stay close to a metro station.
