City guide
San Diego
Hillcrest bars a short walk apart, Saturday runs in Balboa Park, and Pride in July.
San Diego's gay life centers on Hillcrest, just north of downtown and Balboa Park, where most of the bars sit on University and Fifth Avenues within about a 10-minute walk of each other. North Park, next door to the east, has the leather bar, the bear bar and the drag dinner shows. Outside those two neighborhoods, most people drive.
Neighborhoods
Hillcrest
$$$The gayborhood, and the city's LGBTQ+ cultural district since 2024: the Pride flag at University and Normal, The Center, most of the bars and a Sunday farmers market. New apartment buildings are going up fast, and some new neighbors have complained about bar noise.
North Park
$$–$$$East along University Ave and 30th St: breweries, restaurants, the Eagle, Pecs, and Lips on El Cajon Blvd. Younger and a little cheaper than Hillcrest.
University Heights / Normal Heights
$$–$$$Quieter streets north of Hillcrest along Park Blvd and Adams Ave. Cheers is the local bar, and Hillcrest is a short drive or a long walk.
Bankers Hill
$$$Between Hillcrest and downtown on Balboa Park's west edge. Leafy and walkable to the park and the Front Runners' weeknight runs.
Rent feel is a rough guide from $ (cheaper) to $$$$ (brace yourself).
Bars & clubs
Also open: Gossip Grill (bar, restaurant and nightclub for women and the wider LGBTQ+ crowd, 1220 University Ave), Pecs (bears, a pool table and a patio, 2046 University Ave in North Park), Cheers (University Heights neighborhood bar, 1839 Adams Ave), SRO Lounge (Bankers Hill dive, 1807 Fifth Ave) and Lips (drag dinner and brunch shows Wednesday to Sunday, 3036 El Cajon Blvd).

Moving tips
- The trolley doesn't reach Hillcrest or North Park. Bus Route 10 runs along University Ave from the Old Town Transit Center, and Route 7 and Rapid 215 come up Park Blvd from downtown. Most locals still drive.
- Parking near the University and Fifth bars is tight on weekend nights. Park once and walk, or take a rideshare.
- It's mild all year, but May and June are often gray near the coast. Locals call it May Gray and June Gloom.
- Pride weekend closes streets around the parade route. MTS runs Route 7 and Rapid 215 every 15 minutes or better that weekend, plus a free Pride shuttle.
- Hillcrest is growing fast: the city's 2024 plan allows about 17,000 new homes. Living near the bars? Leases there now include a signed note that it's an entertainment zone, so ask about noise.
