Hair loss meds
Keep what you've got (and maybe a bit more). Or rock the shave. Both are hot.
Minoxidil (over the counter, applied to the scalp) and finasteride (a prescription pill) are the two proven treatments. Finasteride slows loss in most men; minoxidil takes 6–12 months to show results.
Realistically: They hold on to what you have and regrow some, but only while you keep taking them.
Heads up: Finasteride can cause sexual side effects. In trials the extra risk is small, but some men report effects that last after stopping, and the debate is ongoing. Be wary of telehealth kits with compounded drugs; the FDA warned about compounded topical finasteride in 2025.
Downtime, risks, who to see
Downtime: None for medication.
Risks:
- Finasteride: lower libido, erection or ejaculation changes, mood changes (uncommon)
- Minoxidil: scalp irritation, early shedding
- Oral minoxidil: extra body hair, fluid retention, fast heartbeat
Who should do it: A board-certified dermatologist or your primary care doctor.
Ask them:
- Is this male-pattern loss, or could it be thyroid, stress or alopecia areata?
- What side effects should I watch for?
- Is this an FDA-approved product or compounded?
